Derby Creek of the Colorado river is another creek that offers solitude. This creek holds pocket water, big rocks, and a decent amount of water running through it. This means not only endless holes and pocket water but chances at some small creek big fish. By big, I mean around 16 inches but who doesn’t love a 16 inch trout? A fun technique for this river would be a double dry rig. A good setup is using a bigger attractor dry for the first fly, Royal Wulff, Chubby Chernobyl, Stimulator, etc. Next, add an imitative fly to match what is hatching, examples being Elk Hair caddis, Blue Wing Olive, and Pale Morning Dun. These small creeks can hold eager fish that constantly look up for that next meal, so be ready on the first cast for a take. Be stealthy when approaching “fishy” spots on the creek, the banks can always hold fish sitting in the shallows. Try to approach the holes from downstream since fish face upstream and are more likely to be spooked when being walked on from upstream. This creek presents many opportunities so get out there and fish it. As always, be aware of private property and respect the land owners and their land, do not go across or fish private water without permission from the land owner.
