The Las Animas River headwaters is a beautiful stretch of water offering many miles of great fishing and some of the best views in the state. The water shimmers a crystal blue being fed by high glacier runoff making it nothing short of breathtaking. The upper Animas fishes quite well in the summer and fall months. Unfortunately, in 2015  3 million gallons of waste was released into the Cement Creek, a main tributary to the Animas. Cement Creek is recovering from this awful spill. Luckily, Cement Creek feeds into the Las Animas right below the town of Silverton making everything above town very fishable. Fishing above this confluence yields great fishing. You can fish up as far as you’d like, finding plenty of healthy brook trout and some more sizable rainbows and browns!
