The Green Mountain Tailwater is part of the Blue River Drainage and provides an awesome adventure for the day.  The fishing isn’t always easy on this river, but the scenery is always impressive.  Sizeable trout can be caught here with patience, but the hike into the river is incredibly steep and not for the faint of heart.  Let’s just say there’s a rope and it’s a good idea to use it.

Somehow this tailwater gets overlooked.  It’s a great section of water that is fairly easy to access until you get to the river.  It has a good population of medium sized trout.  It isn’t as close to Denver as the Silverthorne tailwater, but it isn’t much further and often much less crowded.  The river really opens up below Green Mountain Reservoir and gets larger.  Pine trees line the rivers edge and wading is your best bet for a good cast.  There is a trail along the river that makes accessing the river easy.  The hardest part about accessing this section is the steep 150ft hill next to the parking lot.  Tread carefully as this is steep and difficult to go down.  Going up is easier though it’s a workout, but downhill is a recipe for disaster if you aren’t watching your step or your rod.  if it’s wintertime you may be better of just bringing a pair of skis if you have some fresh snow :).

Fishable year round, this tailwater is a little easier than most to catch fish, but still a tricky tailwater.  Delicate nymphing presentations behind the rocks and riffles will produce fish and dead-drifts in the runs will pull out some of the bigger fish.  Stoneflies and mayflies seem to be in excess on this section of river and are good flies to try early on if you don’t know where to start.
