La Plata is classic small stream brook trout water, but with a twist.  The fish are surprisingly smart in this river from my experience and require stealth in order to catch them and a smooth presentation.  An added challenge, but not so hard you won’t find fish.  The river is often extremely clear making it easy to spook the trout.  5x and a 7.5ft to 9ft leader is recommended.  2-5wt rods are best here for soft and easy presentations.  I prefer dry flies only here, but if you want to do a dry dropper I think you’d find some good fish as well that way.

The further you drive up in summer months, the more solitude you’ll find, though we went over the weekend and didn’t see anyone else fishing.  It’s a cool little canyon you’re fishing in and a fun place to explore, hike and fish.  There isn’t a ton of dispersed camping until you get to the upper reaches.  The rest is paid campgrounds.

We did some great hiking in the aspens nearby and got lucky to find some puffballs for dinner 🙂
