Some rivers surprise you and others dissapoint. This luckily, is the former. Small water that gets better as spring warms up but before the water gets too hot to harm the fish, this fishery boasts a large number of browns in varying size. While a creek this small would typcially yield 6-12inch browns, there are a few quite a bit larger in here ranging up to 16”. This makes it fun as you hunt up the river silently stalking the trout that are tightly tucked beneath the banks and overhangs. A sneaky approach and a single dry fly will usually be the trick on this kind of creek as a two fly set up can be too clunky to land the much needed accurate casts to find these trout.

If you’re looking for a place away from the crowds to chase a variety of nicely sized browns for a day, this is your place.  With Tomichi, the lower Gunnison and Cochetopa all nearby as other great options, this is fast becoming one of my favorite areas to fish.

Keep in mind summer months and the heat.  Small creeks like this will not only become unfishable due to the heat, but can kill the trout if you catch them and the water temps are too high.  Bring a thermometer and if the water is above 68 F, stop fishing and try somewhere higher elevation or a tailwater like the taylor nearby.  If you don’t have a thermometer, anytime the air temps have been above 85 for a few days straight, you can expect that water to be above the healthy levels for trout.  If you are going to fish, fish early and stop by 10 am most times.  Thanks for protecting this fishery and do enjoy what it has to offer!
