The Piedra river is a secluded bit of water that is loaded with trout that feed on the the vast amounts of stoneflies in the river.  A great place to catch the salmonfly hatch after runoff, the fish are willing to eat some large flies.  The river has a few forks shown on the map and nearly everything is fishable since it resides in national forest.  Big rocky cliffs and deep plunge pools make for some fun casting and scenic habitat in the canyon.  The river holds a variety of scenery and it’s easy to find some open water if you’re willing to hike.

Though you can make a day trip out of the river, you can also make it a weekend trip and backpack in or work your way up and down from the campgrounds.  Those willing to hike into the wilderness further than the norm will be rewarded.
