The South Fork of the San Miguel is a special fork of the already amazing San Miguel River. Hosting rainbow and brown trout (to my knowledge) ranging in the 10-15” range, this section has a sense of seclusion and difficulty in access that makes it a great place for the angler who wants some solitude, but wants it easy as well. I spent my time on the river with two rods fishing both euro nymphing in the deeper holes and dry fly fishing the edges and likely dry fly spots as I worked up the river for a few hours. Finding a variety of insect hatches, active fish, and gorgeous scenery, this river holds a nice place in my heart as an enjoyable and expansive place to fish.

The further up you go, the less populated it gets and there’s a point that if you hike in from the river up the the tributaries, you can get quite a bit of seclusion and isolation for some very interesting fishing.  If you’re in the telluride area, there is a ton of water around to fish.  Choose this place if you like some solitude, small-size rivers with a mix of holes, pocket water and runs that will put a rewarding challenge to your fishing day.
