The headwaters of the Uncompahgre River is worth pulling over and looking at on your way through the Million Dollar highway. The water is much too turbulent for any sort of fishing though you may be able to dabble and dip into the side eddies above the falls for a fish or two. Getting down to the bottom of the canyon is arduous labor, dangerous, and overall fishing is not very good. It is beautiful  and sound to see and hear the water rush down a steep face cliff to the bottom of what will become the world renowned Uncompahgre River. For added adventure you can hike/jeep/offroad up “Engineer Pass” along the rushing glacial melt into the high country. We do not recommend taking “non-offroad” capable vehicles up this road. If your primary goal is fishing, this is not a place to spend much time but it is quite breathtaking. The fishing is world class just north of Ouray in Ridgeway.
