Clear, beautiful and full of fish, the Cimarron river is a great treasure to get off the beaten trail.  With larger more productive rivers like the Gunnison and Taylor and East rivers nearby, the Cimarron gets overlooked by most and provides three forks of opportunity to fish including a small tailwater.  Another great option for anglers looking to catch the grand slam of all four trout species, this river holds them all though most will be rainbows and cutthroat.

The lower section by the confluence is good fishing and easy access off the road. The tailwater section is also accessible and can hold some larger fish if you put your hours in.  The upper forks are the most beautiful and hold the most access and provide a great small stream experience with a chance to catch mostly brook, rainbow and cutthroat trout ranging from 4” to 15”.

This is a place that can provide solitude if you’re willing to hike and catch some smaller fish, you won’t be disappointed by the scenery.
