The Conejos River is one of Colorado’s gems.  Located near the New Mexico border, it is a long drive to access.  If you are willing to make the trip however, you’ll have access to over 200 miles of fishable water from the Conejos and surrounding tributaries.  There are some places that likely never get fished the entire year up in these mountains if you are willing to hike.  There are places to catch some large trout and some places to catch many small fish providing anglers a great opportunity to catch fish regardless of your experience as an angler.

The lower conejos is a mix bag of private and public water and it is all well marked.  Though the pressure is low, these fish aren’t stupid and require the right fly selection and a good cast to catch.  The scenery and water is some of the most beautiful in the state and there is ample dispersed camping.  It’s a rugged area so come prepared as you won’t find any wal-marts or many gas stations either.  This is true Colorado high country and experienced anglers and wilderness explorers will find this area to be among their favorite places to visit.  If you’re looking for park and fish opportunities here, you may find yourself in too rugged of an environment for your taste.
