The San Miguel River has several small tributaries like Big Bear and Fall Creek.  These tributaries are redstone creeks with some interesting small creek fishing.  The fishing is not easy and access is difficult. I found these rivers very enjoyable because of the stalk and fish aspect to the river.  You have to go slow and stay low as you hike up a steep, waterfall tiered river.  Then, with a small bow and arrow cast and a 2 second drift, you hope to fool the 6 inch rainbow sitting in the pocket no wider than a bird bath.   This is not a fishery for many folks as they won’t waste the time on just a few small fish.  However, if you want to up your small stream skills, this is a good place to test them.  It is unforgiving and yet holds a sense of beauty different than the San Miguel and other areas in the area to fish (which is saying something because Telluride and the surrounding area is some of the prettiest places in Colorado).

I only found rainbows, though if you try you may find browns and brook trout as a possibility.  I think the cutts are mostly in the upper reaches of the san miguel and on the main river.
