The canyon section of the Piedra River can be accessed as a day hike or multi-day hike for those looking for few crowds and many fish.  While mostly a brown trout fishery there are a few rainbows here and there.  Fish eat a variety of nymphs, streamers and dry flies depending on the hatch and time of year you are fishing the canyon.  Though not completely a canyon, you’ll see there are some sheer rock cliffs you fish near at the beginning of this section.  I found the fish to be more challenging than I expected and the crowds to be higher than I thought for this area as well, though it was still easy to find you’re own section of water and explore.

I probably shouldn’t share this, but since we didn’t catch it I will.  When we fished this section we spooked out a behomoth of a brown trout.  I wouldn’t be shocked if it was 25” and it could have been over 30”.  This is most, most unnatural for a river this size, but every now and again you see the fish of a lifetime.  Despite our numerous streamer attempts into the murky waters, he eluded us.  Simply coming across this kind of a fish blew my mind and made our fishing day.  We caught about 30 fish between the 2 of us, but I would have skipped them all if I could have just caught that one :).  What a day and a great bit of scenery too.
