The Beadhead 20 Incher Stonefly is tied with a heavy brass bead on the head, with a peacock herl wrapped abdomen to bring realism. The gold ribbing around the peacock herl works to make this pattern work as an attractor nymph. We used goose biots for the tail because they are firm and durable and will survive many encounters with trout. The wing casing provides lifelike legs and accurately imitates the profile of an actual stonefly nymph.
The beadhead twenty incher stonefly nymph is one of my go to flies when the river is full of stonefly nymphs. Rivers like the Colorado or the Arkansas are great examples of where to use this fly. It has a realistic look and does well in a variety of water speeds making it an excellent all purpose fly to use throughout the day. It sinks well, and gets in the strike zone making it easy for the trout to make a meal from it without trying too hard.
You can easily purchase the Beadhead 20 Incher stonefly nymph pattern by the dozen or in convenient sampler packs which contain 4 flies of 3 different sizes to meet the needs of any angler.
What does the 20 Incher Stonefly imitate?
Trout love stoneflies because they are poor swimmers, are large and contain a large amount of calories to make the effort worth their while. Stonefly nymphs exist in rivers worldwide, but do best in clean, cold river systems. They also live year round and range in fly sizes #4 – #18 and naturally occur in black, brown, yellow and mixed colors of those mentioned before.
Most people will think to fish stoneflies in the summer, but they can be great year round as they have up to a three, year lifecycle as a nymph before crawling out off the banks and emerging into an adult with 4 wings. When in the adult, dry fly stage, try imitating stoneflies with a rubberleg stimulator. The 20 incher most accurately imitates a golden stonefly, though it’s a great pattern to have if the rivers you fish contain stoneflies of any species.
The realistic materials and profile of the 20 incher stonefly pattern create an excellent imitation of stoneflies. The gold ribbing on the back both attracts a trouts attention as well as matches the segmented body of a natural stonefly nymph. This version comes with a beadhead to help it get down deep fast in the strike zone where the trout are feeding.
This is a great fly that has a spot in my fly box all year round. Grab some today by the dozen and keep some in stock or share them with a friend.
I’ve used this pattern for a long time. If you want to see how it does, check out some of our fly fishing videos of us fishing with it in action.
