South Boulder Creek Fishing Information
Upper Section - near Rollinsville, CO
The upper section is mostly private, but a few spots are marked on the map and listed below. The river contains browns, rainbows, brook and cutthroat giving you a chance for the grand slam. You’ll need to cover water to find all four as they typically don’t hang out all together in the same hole. The private fishing club, Lincoln Hills above pinecliffe puts some monster fish in the river and there is always a chance of catching a run away private fish, so walk carefully and stealthy and you might come up on a monster trout over 18+ in the river.
General Info
South Boulder Creek or SBC as the local call it is one of the closest tailwaters you can fish in the front range. The upper section has some public access above gross reservoir, but most of it is private leaving the most popular section, the tailwater as the likely destination. Below Gross, the river is fishable year round as long as the flows stay up. The state drops the flows below 25cfs often in the winter creating fish kills and iced rivers, but if they keep the flows going year round, the fishery is quite excellent. Mainly rainbows and browns are caught in the tailwater section as well as down into town. Up above you can catch brook and cutties. The river is a great place to spend a day or half day since it is so close to access and requires little effort to reach.

Midge Hatches
Midges hatch year round, but their importance is from September through winter into April. During the warmer months, the trout often focus on larger insects as they are more active on the water like mayflies, caddis and stoneflies.
Aside from Blue wing olives, mayflies are active most commonly from May to August in Colorado. There are many different mayfly hatches found on most rivers and the most common are listed below.

Caddis hatch starting early in May and continue to the end of October.

Stonefly Hatches
We have some great stonefly hatches in Colorado and while not all rivers carry all species of salmonflies, you can often fish stonefly adult patterns with confidence from May to September. Start off in bigger sizes and get smaller till September hits (size 8 - 16)

Terrestrials don't hatch since they are out of the water, but they can have importance starting in Mid April and ending in September.
