Three Reasons to Invest in a Great Fly Box Now

A well-stocked box = continued fishing success

Why should you invest in a great fly box?

Before I answer that question fully, let me clarify! I’m not taking about the box itself (although you can snag a pretty awesome Catch and The Hatch fly box right here). I’m talking about the contents of your box — or the fly patterns that actually fill your box or boxes. That’s what you should invest in, if you’re looking to catch trout no matter the situation.

Think about it in terms of an equation: increased time invested understanding + stocking + organizing your fly boxes = increased # of fish caught. By putting in a some extra effort on your fly box before actually heading out to the river, the better you’ll do when you get there. Simply because you’ll have what you need in your box to capitalize on any situation.

Just to nail down our point one more time — more time spent = more fish in the net. Here are three more reasons why this statement is true:

Reason #1

Your Fly box will last

The messy “idk what this is,” “my friend got me this” fly filled boxes never last long.

Why? They take up too much of your time while you’re out on the river! Bring a willy-nilly box like that out fishing, and you’ll probably end up searching for the correct fly for way too long, only to discover that you don’t even have it on you. As a result, you’ll end up fishing with some totally random pattern…catch less fish… become sad…you get it the picture.

At the end of the day, it makes sense to spend the time and the money on a solid fly-filled box. Really give the process some thought, too. Learn whether or not you’re already well covered in every season, and every insect hatch that occurs in your area during that season.

If you’re exclusively a summertime angler, focus on creating the ultimate summer box that covers all of the insects you’ll potentially encounter. Even further, know where you’ve organized said insects in your box. Then, when you’re actually out on the water, you can spend less time shifting through a rat’s nest of a fly box, and more time actually hooking into trout.

Reason #2

You’ll catch more fish with a well-stocked box

You’ll catch more fish with a well-thought-out, well-stocked box.

If you have great fly boxes — crafted specifically for the seasons, species, and water types you intend to fish — you’re going to be more prepared when you’re out on the water. Just as importantly, you’re going to have more flexibility when it comes to finding out exactly what they’re eating.

Now, if you discover what the trout are munching on and you DID come prepared with that fly… trust me…you’re about to have a FANTASTIC day of fishing. And I mean, fantastic.

Still, this means you’re going to have to know your bugs before you actually stock your box. You’ll also want to study the Four Kinds of Fishing Flies if you haven’t already (which you can do right now, just by following the link)! If you have some entomology knowledge under your wading belt, alongside an understanding of which fly patterns work best to imitate a variety of insects, you’re going to be an unstoppable fishing maniac. No doubt about it.

We’ve all been there…

You show up to your fishing spot, eager and optimistic. You toss on your waders and boots, snag your trusty fly rod(s), and shuffle on down to the river’s edge. Once you get there, you discover that the fish are eating caddis like a bunch of famished hyenas — so you open your fly box, only to find miss-matched mayflies and midges. The wind is immediately knocked out of your sails. You’re a fly away from having one of the best fishing days of your life.

While the above scenario is truly tragic, it’s also entirely avoidable — IF you have a well stocked box. If you’ve already been diligent about how you stocked your box, odds are you’ll never have to experience that terrible wave of FOMO that washes over any angler that shows up accidentally unprepared. You’ll never miss those epic, hook-sets-on-every-cast, moments.

Not sure where to get started? Check out our Craft Your Fly Box Course to learn, in extensive detail, about exactly HOW to fill your box depending on the seasons + species + types of water you intend to fish. You’ll score some pretty sweet 50% OFF coupons on fly assortments, flies, and boxes, too. That’s a dang good deal.

KATIE GILBERT

Hey, I’m Katie! I was born and raised in Washington State and currently reside in Bend, OR. Growing up, you’d find me causing trouble with my triplet siblings + older brother, practicing piano instead of doing homework, and encouraging my golden retriever to roll in whatever puddle it wanted too. Nowadays you can catch me untangling my dry flies from foliage, skiing Mt. Bachelor, hiking Smith Rock, and baking cookies nightly. I’m an intermediate-level angler, anxious to explore new spots around Oregon and master new techniques. Hopefully I’ll catch plenty of trout along the way too. Thanks for reading!
