How Deep Is Your Streamer Really Fishing?

How line, leader, angle, and retrieve control depth

Your streamer is almost certainly not fishing where you think it is. The depth of a streamer is not a fixed number you dial in at the start and hold throughout the retrieve. It is a moving path shaped by your line type, leader length, cast angle, current speed, and how fast you strip. Once you understand how each of those variables pushes the fly up or pulls it down, you can actually control where the fly travels instead of just hoping it ends up in the right place.


Depth Is a Path Not a Number

Picture two anglers standing side by side at the same hole, throwing the same fly to the same spot. One is on a floating line with a weighted Beadhead Woolly Bugger. The other is on a full-sinking line with an unweighted Zonker Streamer. Even though they cast to identical water, those two flies trace completely different paths through the pool.

The floating-line angler's fly drops quickly after the cast lands – the weight of the beadhead pulls it down fast. If the water is deep enough and the angler counts for a few seconds before stripping, the fly might touch the target depth. But the instant stripping begins, the floating line creates upward tension. The fly starts climbing toward the surface from the first strip. It spends only a brief window at the right depth, then it rises into shallower water for the rest of the retrieve.

The full-sinking line angler's fly sinks differently. Because the entire line is going under, the fly moves horizontally through the water column once the retrieve begins. It stays near the depth it reached during the sink, giving it a much longer window in the strike zone throughout the whole swing or strip.

This is the core concept. Depth is a path – a V-shaped arc for a weighted fly on a floating line, a flatter horizontal track for a full-sinking setup. Good streamer anglers understand this intuitively because they spend time watching their flies in clear, shallow water before fishing them in deep runs. When you see how a fly actually moves when it is swung, jerked, or jigged in knee-deep water you can trust, you stop guessing about what it is doing in the four-foot-deep slot you cannot see.


How Each Part of the System Changes Depth

Every component in your setup either adds depth, reduces depth, or changes how long the fly stays there. Here is what each one does.

Line type is the most powerful lever you have. Floating lines keep the fly near the surface except for a brief window at the start of the retrieve. Intermediate or sinking-tip lines are the go-to for most strip-and-retrieve streamer situations on mid-depth rivers. They get the fly down without the casting difficulty of a full-sinking line, and they let you maintain reasonable control through the retrieve. Full-sinking lines sink along their entire length, so the fly travels horizontally rather than on an upward arc. The sink rate of sinking lines is measured in inches per second, often labeled as IPS. A line rated at 5 IPS will drop roughly 10 inches in 2 seconds. Knowing your line's sink rate lets you use a count-down method before you start stripping – count to the number that gets the fly into the target zone, then begin the retrieve.

Sink-tip length matters more than many anglers realize. Short sink tips work well for most situations, but once you start fishing sink tips longer than about 15 feet, you are usually better off switching to a full-sinking line. Beyond that length, the casting mechanics become awkward and the handling benefits of a sink-tip are lost. Shorter sink tips also roll-cast more cleanly, which matters when you are wading in tight water.

Leader length and material affect depth more than most anglers expect. For streamer fishing, a 6 to 7-foot fluorocarbon or monofilament leader is standard. These leaders are shorter, heavier, and tougher than what you would use for dries or nymphs – they need to scrape along logs and get chewed on without snapping. Shorten the leader to get the fly deeper because a shorter connection lets the fly track closer to the sinking line. Lengthen it and the fly has more room to float upward during the swing, especially on a slow sink-tip. This is one of the simplest adjustments you can make on the water when you need the fly to run a little shallower or a little deeper without changing lines entirely.

Cast angle changes how much sink time the fly gets before the current and line tension take over. An upstream cast gives the fly the most uninterrupted sink time because the line drifts with the current before it tightens. A cast directly across the current gives less sink time – the line begins to swing and create tension fairly quickly. A downstream cast gives the least sink time of all, because the current immediately puts tension on the line. If you need the fly deeper, angle the cast further upstream and let it count down before you begin stripping. If you need the fly higher in the water column, fish the angle more across or downstream.

Retrieve speed is the last major control. Every time you strip line, you are creating tension and pulling the fly upward. Slow, short strips keep the fly lower. Fast, aggressive strips pull it toward the surface more quickly. Pausing between strips lets the fly drop back down. This is why changing retrieve speed is one of the fastest fixes when you know the fly is running at the wrong depth.


Build a Useful Depth Plan

Before you wade in, take 90 seconds to assess the water and make a few decisions. This is not a rigid checklist – it is a thought process that becomes automatic with practice.

Step 1: Read the target zone. How deep is the water where the fish should be holding? Is the current fast or slow? Fast, deep water pushes you toward heavier, faster-sinking setups. Slow, shallow water can fish well on a floating or intermediate line.

Step 2: Choose the right line. For shallow water or aggressive surface presentations, a floating line with a weighted fly works fine. For most mid-depth river situations, an intermediate or sinking-tip line is the go-to – it handles typical casting demands, handles roll casts, and gives you enough depth to work most holding water. For deep or fast water where you need the fly running near the bottom throughout the whole retrieve, a full-sinking line is worth the extra casting effort.

Step 3: Set the leader. Start with a 6 to 7-foot leader. Shorten it toward 4 to 5 feet if you want the fly to track closer to the line and run deeper. Lengthen it beyond 7 feet if you want the fly to ride higher on a swing.

Step 4: Pick the cast angle. Upstream angles for more sink time. Across for a standard swing presentation. Downstream for faster, shallower presentations. Match the angle to where the fish are in the water column.

Step 5: Set your retrieve. Decide before the first strip whether you want a slow-and-low retrieve or a faster, more aggressive one. You can always adjust mid-session, but starting with intention keeps you from randomly stumbling through different depths without learning anything from the session.

The underlying principle here is that a weighted fly and a sinking line are not interchangeable tools. Switching to a heavier fly does not give you the same depth control as switching to a sinking line. A heavier fly drops faster on the initial sink, but it still rises on the retrieve if the line is floating. The line is what holds the fly at depth throughout the retrieve.


A Worked Example Across a Pool

Stand at the top of a typical mid-size pool and imagine fishing it from head to tail. Here is how the depth plan changes as you move through each section.

At the head of the pool: The water is fast and shallow, maybe 18 to 24 inches deep where it pours in over the rocks. Trout can hold in the seam between the fast water and the slower current at the edge of the riffle. A floating line with a lightly weighted Beadhead Woolly Bugger fished on a short count works well here. Cast slightly upstream, mend once to slow the drift, and let the fly swing across the seam before stripping back. The fly traces that V-shaped arc – down for a beat, then rising on the swing. The short window at depth is enough in shallow water because the target zone is only a foot down.

In the main body of the pool: The water deepens to four or five feet and slows down. This is prime holding water. A floating line with a weighted fly is going to spend most of the retrieve above the strike zone. Switch to an intermediate or sinking-tip line. Cast upstream at a 45-degree angle and count down to give the fly time to reach the lower third of the water column. A Zonker Streamer or a Slumpbuster works well here – patterns with some bulk and movement that fish naturally on a horizontal retrieve. Use slow, deliberate strips with pauses. The pauses let the fly drop back down each time, keeping it in the zone longer.

At the tail-out: The pool flattens and shallows to two or three feet before breaking into the next riffle. Trout often stack up at the edge of tail-outs, especially in lower light. Go back to the floating line or a very slow intermediate. Cast across the current and let the fly swing without much stripping. A natural swing through the tail-out presents the fly broadside to any fish holding in the shallower water. Slow and easy here – the fly does not need to go deep, and a fast retrieve will push it above the fish entirely.

By thinking about this walk from head to tail, you are essentially making three different depth decisions for three different sections of the same hundred-yard piece of water. The angler who fishes all three sections with the same line, same cast angle, and same retrieve is leaving holding water unfished.


How to Know When the Fly Is Too High or Too Low

Two failure modes come up constantly with streamer fishing, and both are easy to diagnose once you know what to look for.

The fly is too high. The most common signal is a follow that ends early. A trout chases the fly and then turns off without eating. Sometimes you can see this in clear water, and sometimes you just feel the fish bump or pull and then nothing. What often happens is that the fly swings upward through the retrieve and the fish loses interest when it rises out of the comfortable feeding zone. Other clues: you are not getting any contact with the bottom in a section you know has deep holding water, or your fly feels weightless through the whole retrieve with no sense of the current pushing on it from below.

Fix it by switching to a sinking-tip or full-sinking line, shortening the leader, counting down longer before you start stripping, slowing the retrieve, or adding an upstream mend after the cast to delay line tension. You can also try a heavier fly if you are already on a sinking-tip.

The fly is too deep. This one is obvious and expensive: the fly snags bottom. You strip and the line stops abruptly, then comes back without the fly or with a piece of moss on the hook. If it happens repeatedly in the same run, you are running the fly too low.

Fix it by switching to a floating or intermediate line, lengthening the leader (which allows the fly to ride higher), retrieving faster to create more upward tension, or changing the cast angle to across or downstream to reduce sink time. Switching to a lighter or unweighted pattern also helps if the fly itself is contributing to the depth problem.

The diagnostic tool that helps most with both failure modes is watching your flies in shallow, clear water before you fish the deep run. Drop a weighted Beadhead Woolly Bugger into ankle-deep water on a short line and watch what happens when you strip it, let it swing, and pause the retrieve. You will see exactly how quickly it drops, how fast it rises on the strip, and how it behaves on a pause. That visual information translates directly to your mental model of what the fly is doing in the water you cannot see.

One last note on follows: a fish that chases the fly all the way to the bank and turns off at the last second is giving you information. That fish was interested enough to move but did not commit. More often than not, the fly path through the water was slightly off – either the depth, the speed, or the angle did not quite match what the fish wanted to do. Follows are feedback, not failures.
