The Upper Section of the Lake Fork of the Gunnison is as picturesque as can be.  Huge mountains in the backdrop overlooking cimmaron pass and the san juan mountains in view along with a crystal clear river housing enough insects to keep the trout happy makes for a fly fishing experience that in my opinion, as good as you can get anywhere in the world.

With the amount of public access available (mostly above san cristobal lake) there is plenty of opportunity to find you’re own water and enjoy.  I highly, HIGHLY recommend doing some hiking to get away from the most pressured areas as it makes a big difference in the fishing.

Standard dries and nymphs (listed below) will work great here and fly selection isn’t overly necessary to get just right.  Location is key here in my experience and what may seem like good water in some areas produces little, and in other places just a quarter mile up the river yields dozens of trout.  Cover some ground, it’s not only good exercise in one of the most beautiful places in Colorado, but it will also improve the fishing.

I think this place is a bucket list kind of destination and one of my favorites.  The drive is long, but good things come for those who wait!
