It’s time for a fish story and how the Autumn Splendor caught me one of my biggest fish in Colorado:
Up on the Elk river a couple years back I was fishing this fly from upstream, letting it slow drift into deeper pools and then giving it short, quick strips to bring it back out.
As I did this on one particular hole, I noticed a wake from the back of the pool and since I was perched on a rock, I could see down into the water with clarity. A monstrous 24” inch rainbow came up and gulped it down. It was slo-motion unbelief. I set the hook and the fish took off downstream for pocket water.
It was all I could do to just hold on as my line was quickly to its backing. Backing! On a small stream like this was unheard of. As the fish got further away and I tried to follow along the slick rocks, the fish went around a rock and my line stuck. As I got closer, I realized the fish had gotten loose by getting around that rock…
Devastated and still in shock, I resolved to retrieve my fly as I was still hung up under this rock out in the river. I waded out and put my hand underneath the cold water to unhook my fly that hooked a monster rainbow (wasn’t about to let that fly go :), and I felt something strange under the rock.
Felt like a fish tail…as soon as I touched it, out shot the monster rainbow for another run down stream with the fly still in his mouth! The current was so strong it had taken my line under and made it seem like I was snagged when in fact, I still had the fish hooked, but only the line stuck on the rock. It fortunately came loose as the fish ran and after another 15 minutes of running with it down stream, I landed it in some pocket water.
Barely fitting in my net, I just laughed. I wish I could have shaken that fishes hand, cause it put up the best fight and tricks I’ve ever seen. One of the more memorable fish of the day.
All this to say, I’ve never had another experience like that, but had many other great success stories with the Autumn Splendor. It either makes fish hungry, or it pisses them off; either way, they are going to take a bite out of this fly.
