The Uncompahgre River is a freestone river for most of it’s waters. With limited access flowing mainly through private lands, the fishing can be fickle but productive.  The fishing gets a little technical on the lower section but the beauty of the river makes up for the difficulty of fishing.  Being a free stone, standard caddis and stonefly have a strong importance and early and late in the year the midges and mayflies are dominant.

The real gem of the river is the tailwater below Ridgeway reservoir.  The tailwater is called the pa-co-chu-puk and may very well hold the largest fish in the state.  The fish range 12-18 in most places, but there are a few brutes that can be caught well over 25”.  If you want to put in your time, night and day fishing is required to find the big fish.  The patient will be rewarded on this tailwater, the rest will experience pretty waters and some fun fish.
