Vallecito Creek is an excellent Colorado adventure for anyone looking to hike and fish for small, but wild trout. The river is insanely beautiful and has a unique glacial runoff feel to it. While the fishing can be tough at times, its important to fish it when the flows have dropped a bit. Dry dropper set ups and focusing on the likely holding water (pockets, runs and riffles) will yield some wild trout.

This is definitely a hike-in type of fishing trip, so plan accordingly for the backcountry and be prepared for weather, wild animals and bring what you need to be safe and have fun!

Go light on your flies and gear, the fish aren’t terribly hard to catch most times and it is more about presentation here than the flies chosen.  A few high floating dries in a mix of sizes and colors and some standard nymphs should get the job done.  Enjoy the beauty and peace this river has to offer, it’s a real transformative place in my opinion.
