Are Trout Eating Emergers or Duns?

How to identify the stage fish are taking

When trout are rising and your dry fly keeps getting refused, the problem is usually not the pattern – it's the stage. Identifying the insect family is the first step, but trout often lock onto one specific phase of the hatch. An emerger is still trapped in or just below the surface film. A dun has broken free and is riding the water upright, wings fully extended. These are two different food forms, and trout treat them differently. Get the stage right before you pick the pattern, and your refusal rate drops immediately.


Emergers and Duns Create Different Feeding Clues

The mayfly life cycle moves in one direction: nymph, emerger, adult (dun), spinner. Each stage sits in a different position in the water column and creates a different opportunity for trout. Understanding the difference between an emerger and a dun is the foundation of reading any hatch correctly.

An emerger is a mayfly mid-transformation. The nymph has made it to the surface but the adult has not yet fully broken free of the shuck. The bug is hanging in or just below the surface film, wings still folded or crumpled, body angled downward. From below, it is an easy, stationary target. The trout does not have to commit to lifting fully to the surface to eat it – the food comes to the fish's level.

A dun is the fully hatched adult. It sits on the surface with upright wings, sailing downstream like a little sailboat, ready to fly off when its wings have dried. It's more exposed but also more mobile, and it sits higher in the water column. Trout feeding on duns are making a clear commitment to the surface.

Both stages are valid dry fly targets, but they require different fly designs. Emerger patterns like the Fox Squirrel Emerger, Barrs Emerger, CDC Emerger Adams Loopwing, and CDC Pale Morning Dun Cripple Emerger are designed to sit low in the film, with trailing shucks or unformed wings that signal a bug in transition. Dun patterns like the CDC Comparadun BWO, CDC BWO Tailwater Dun, Parachute Pale Morning Dun, and CDC PMD Tailwater Dun ride higher and upright, imitating the finished adult.

The failure mode most anglers fall into is reaching for a dun pattern the moment fish start rising. Surface activity looks like dry fly fishing, and dun patterns feel like the right call. But if the trout are sipping emergers just under the film, a high-riding dun pattern is sitting too high and presenting the wrong shape. The fish look at it, and they pass.

Caddis hatches work on the same principle. A caddis larva lives in the gravel, a pupa rises through the water column toward the surface, and the adult hatches and skitters away. Insects like the Little Black Caddis and Mother's Day Caddis have distinct larva and pupa stages subsurface, and an adult stage at the surface. Fishing a dry caddis adult during a pupa emergence is another version of the same stage mismatch.


Read Rise Form Position and Timing

Before you tie on any fly, spend two or three minutes watching. What you see at the surface will usually tell you which stage the trout are feeding on.

Rise form: A trout eating a dun typically shows a clean, confident lift to the surface. The fish rises, tips up, and you see a nose and sometimes a dorsal fin. The rise is deliberate. A trout sipping emergers often shows a much softer, more subtle ring – sometimes just a slow bulge with a gentle dimple, or a quick sip where the nose barely breaks the surface. The fish doesn't need to extend all the way up because the food is right there in the film.

Bubble trails: When a trout takes a dun cleanly, it often leaves a small air bubble in the ring. When it's sipping emergers, the take is tighter to the film and you may see fewer bubbles. This is a rough guide, not an absolute rule, but it's worth watching for.

What's on the surface: Look at the water around you, not just where fish are rising. Are you seeing fully winged adults drifting free and intact? Or are you seeing shucks – those translucent, papery casings the adult leaves behind? A lot of floating shucks on the surface is a strong signal that fish are eating emergers. The adult has already broken free, and the shuck is drifting away. If trout were eating the adults, you'd expect to see those intact duns disappearing from the surface at a faster rate.

Timing within the hatch: A hatch follows a rough progression. Early in the hatch, when bugs are first coming up, the emerger stage dominates. The nymphs are swimming to the surface and struggling out of their shucks. As the hatch peaks, you get a mix of emergers and freshly hatched duns. Toward the end, the adults are more abundant and many have already lifted off. If you arrive at the water mid-hatch, you're likely in the overlap zone where both stages are worth trying. If you arrive early, start with an emerger.

Where trout are holding: Fish sipping in a slow, flat pool are often locked onto emergers. They have time to be selective. Fish rising in a quicker riffle may be less picky about the exact stage, but a closer look at the rise form still helps.

Clear Creek Canyon in Colorado is a good example to keep in mind. Blue-Winged Olives hatch on this freestone river across a wide seasonal window, with emerger activity noted through summer and into fall, and adult stage activity from spring well into fall. During that kind of extended hatch, you can see both stages on the water at the same time. On a given afternoon in late summer, the fish in slower pockets might be locked on emergers while fish in the faster water are happily taking duns. Reading the water section by section is more useful than picking one pattern for the whole day.


Choose the Stage Before the Pattern

Here is the decision in plain terms: observe the rise, read the clues, decide on the stage, then choose the pattern. Do not start with the pattern and work backward.

Most anglers get this sequence inverted. They identify the bug – let's say a Blue-Winged Olive – and they immediately start thinking about which BWO dry fly to tie on. That's a reasonable instinct, but it skips the most important question: are these fish eating the adult or the emerger? The answer to that question determines which category of fly you need, and the individual pattern comes second.

Think of it like this. You wouldn't order a meal without first deciding whether you want breakfast or dinner. Same insect, different stage, completely different presentation requirement.

Once you've decided on the stage, you have a useful framework for fly selection:

If the fish are eating emergers: reach for patterns that sit in or just below the film with a trailing shuck or a soft, unformed wing. The Fox Squirrel Emerger is a reliable general mayfly emerger with good film penetration. The Barrs Emerger works especially well on technical water where fish are picky. Having both categories in your box is not redundancy. It's the minimum needed to fish a hatch competently. A box with only duns, or only emergers, is a half-prepared box. The hatch doesn't care which stage you came prepared for.

A Worked Mayfly Hatch Example

You're standing on Clear Creek in Colorado on a cool October afternoon. Clouds have moved in, the temperature dropped about ten degrees in the last hour, and Blue-Winged Olives are starting to show. Small gray bugs, size 18 or 20, drifting in the current. Fish are rising in the slower water along the far bank.

Your first instinct is to tie on a CDC Comparadun BWO. The fish are rising, BWOs are flying, it feels right.

You make three drifts. Nothing. You put the fly right over a fish that was rising every thirty seconds, and it just keeps rising – ignoring your fly completely.

Stop and watch. Look at what's floating on the water. You notice a line of small translucent shucks coming through the current. The adults on the water look fully formed but there aren't many of them, and the fish are not lifting cleanly to eat them. The rises are subtle, soft little sips, barely breaking the surface. A BWO adult drifts directly over one of the rising fish and goes untouched.

That tells you what you need to know. The fish are not eating the duns – they're eating emergers. The bugs are hatching and the trout are picking them off at the film before the wings have opened, before they can fly.

Clip off the comparadun. Tie on a CDC Emerger BWO Loopwing. This pattern sits right in the film, with a loop wing that suggests a bug still mid-hatch.

First drift over the same fish: eat.

The adjustment was not about matching the insect size or color more precisely. You already had the right bug. The adjustment was about getting the stage right, which put the fly in the exact feeding lane at the exact depth the trout were keying on.

This sequence – spot the bug, watch the rise, read the surface, identify the stage, swap to the correct category – is repeatable on any river, any hatch. The insect changes. The stage question stays the same.


A Streamside Clue Checklist

Run through these questions when fish are rising and you're not sure which stage they're taking:

1. What is the rise form telling you?

  • Soft sip, gentle bulge, barely breaking the surface: likely emergers
  • Clean deliberate lift, nose and dorsal fin showing: likely duns

2. What's floating on the surface?

  • Lots of shucks visible: fish may be eating emergers, the adults have already hatched off
  • Many intact duns drifting and disappearing: fish are likely eating duns
  • Both shucks and adults on the surface: you may be in the overlap, try emerger first

3. Where in the hatch progression are you?

  • First bugs just showing: start with an emerger
  • Hatch peaking, bugs everywhere: watch rises closely to decide
  • Hatch winding down, mostly adults: switch to a dun if fish are still rising

4. Is your dry fly getting refused or ignored?

  • If a dun pattern is getting refused on consistent rising fish: drop to an emerger
  • If an emerger is not drawing takes and you see adults drifting intact: move up to a dun

5. What does the water type suggest?

  • Slow flat water, long drift: fish get a long look and will be picky about stage
  • Faster riffle: stage still matters, but presentation errors are more forgiving

6. For caddis hatches:

  • Fish bulging subsurface or just below the film during a caddis event: pupa stage, fish are eating the ascending pupa before it reaches the surface
  • Fish eating at or on the surface with caddis adults flying: try an adult dry pattern

Keep this mental checklist short. You don't need to answer all six questions perfectly every time. One or two clear signals – the rise form, the shucks, a refused dun – are usually enough to point you toward the right category. Once you know the category, the pattern choice follows naturally.
