Personal Story on Euro Nymphing
An Amazing Day on The Ruby River, Montana
Euro nymphing has become an extremely popular technique in fly fishing today. However, about 7 years back, I had already heard the whispers of this technique and started learning it when little to no content was around to teach this subject. The learning curve was steep and took quite a bit of time to work things out. With our euro nymphing course and other great resources available online now, there’s never been a better time to take advantage of this new technique and invest in your progression as an angler.
Today I want to share with you a story to illustrate why euro nymphing should be an essential part in your fly fishing skill set. It all started out on the gorgeous Ruby river in Montana.
I Don’t Like Crowds When Fishing…
My father and I don’t like crowds when fishing. So we decided to to the long and brutal hike through the upper stretches of the Ruby River where you have to stay in the high water mark or you can get into some trouble with the law. This kept the people away and we hoped to find some fish.
It’s a classic meadow stream that winds and turns giving ample pools, pocket water and banks where hungry trout lay in wait. Rainbows, browns and whitefish are common in this section. Fishing this section required one person to be in front of the other as you had to stay in the high water mark, so someone had to fish in front and the other had to fish the water directly after the other. Being the gentlemen my father raised me to be, and respecting the seniority, I gave my father the front position and I’d fish behind him all day.
Fishing water someone just fished usually doesn’t pan out, especially when you’re as seasoned and excellent of an angler as my father is. I needed an edge to find the trout that my father couldn’t find. I had been practicing euro nymphing a bit, though this was probably only my 5th time trying it out. The river had some deep pools with quick water over the top, so I knew this technique stood a good chance of getting into the strike zone of the trout. I took my flies from my euro nymph assortment that I tied myself and put on a perdigon and a frenchie since only 2 flies are allowed in MT.
Just an Hour Later…
About an hour passed and I came up to my father to see how he was doing and if he was having any luck. He shrugged and said its been tough and he only had hooked and lost one. He reciprocated the question to me and with a wry smile and a non-shalant deamenaor I shrugged and said I’d only caught about 30. Smelling the BS in that statement, my father laughed and asked, “No, for real, how many?” I told them again, I had caught 30. A brown, a few rainbows and a bunch of whitefish. That’s when it all started to click.
He asked me how I could have caught so many and what he must be doing wrong. I told him he needs to ditch that indicator and get deeper. I showed him my euro nymph rig (you can see the video too here on how I set up my rig) and he asked me to fish the hole he was just fishing and see if I caught anything. 3 casts and 3 fish later, he took off that indicator, tied on my rig and he never missed that indicator the rest of the day. We both ended up catching a ton of trout and whitefish: honestly more than we could accurately count and we went home laughing about how much of a difference it made.
Euro Nymphing Is Not A Gimmick and Here’s Why
What I love about this story, is that it wasn’t how much better of an angler I was than my father. It’s simply a matter that I applied a superior technique for the water that we were fishing that day. We proved that by putting him on the same technique and he got right into the fish just like I had.
How many times have you had on the river where you only catch 3-5 fish for the day and despite your best efforts nymphing with an indicator (traditional nymphing), you just can’t seem to figure it out? It happens A LOT. While fly fishing is not just a numbers game, if we’re honest with ourselves, any day on the water is made better by more fish. Euro nymphing is literally game changing. That’s why I love it and use it whenever it makes sense. I love dry fly fishing more than anything, but if there’s no active trout rising or its the wrong time of year for dry fly fishing (which it is nearly 50% of the year), then euro nymphing is the best way to catch fish in the river.
On a personal note, I love being able to understand a river and the fish that are in it. What I mean by that is, if possible, I like to catch a ton of fish so that by the end of my day, I have a good understanding of what that river holds. If you only catch 3 fish in a river on a day and they are all under 10 inches, you may be fooled into thinking thats all the river offers. With euro nymphing, I feel like 9/10 times I can catch enough fish on a day to know, with a high degree of confidence, what that river offers in terms of fish size, species etc. That to me is really special. At the heart of me, I’m an explorer and I like to explore something fully before I feel I can move on to the next adventure. When you only get to fish a river once (and I’ve never since been back to the Ruby), it gives me a great sense of satisfaction that I was able to fully explore that section of the river. Without euro nymphing, I would have left feeling like I had missed something. That level of satisfaction and enjoyment comes from having several techniques ready to go on any given day to catch fish. If I’m being honest, I think euro nymphing should be the primary technique you use on the river if you also share the goal of getting the most out of each day on the water.
This is why we made our euro nymphing course. We’re passionate about teaching you how to become a better angler because we’ve experienced our own success through this technique and seen our enjoyment and satisfaction on the river increase dramatically. If you’re that angler, that wants to keep improving, there’s no better place to start than learning euro nymphing. I’d encourage you to take our course and take classes and read books. There’s a wealth of information available and while I know that our course will really help accelerate your learning, we encourage you to learn all you can from as many sources as possible. Then you too, can outfish your Dad (or other fishing friend) and make a memory that will last forever.

What People Are Saying About the Course
I had a chance last week to apply the information provided in the excellent “Euro Nymph“ course taught by James Carlin and yourself. The results were spectacular!!!
I fished a small river (large stream) that I had previously fished about a dozen times. I started the day at a run which I suspected contained trout but in a dozen outings, I had never caught a fish in that run. Within 3 minutes, I had landed (and released) 4 fish, one of which was a nice size rainbow, a species I had never caught in that river! This sort of success continued up the river: run, pool, bucket, or riffle. I caught 5 good sized fish in the last large “bucket” which has never happened to me before!!!
Using the information from the course and the Euro Nymphs I bought from you guys, I literally got tired of catching trout and went home!!!!!
I thank you guys for putting together such a wonderful course that has enhanced my trout fishing experience immensely!!
