The Conejos River Valley is a place an angler could spend an entire season exploring.  The Elk Creek of the Conejos is mostly a hike in and fish destination.  Though there is a little fishable water right where you park, the best of the fishing is on the upper trail.  Make a few miles back to get to the meadows area and from there upward the fishing is solid.  It is a tough place to access and the fish are weary of poorly presented flies.  Beginners should likely try different areas, but for the seasoned angler looking for somewhere new to try and explore, this area yields some serious returns on your effort in terms of size, numbers and beauty of fish and scenery.

There is camping that is hike in only up the trail a ways and makes for a good backpacking trip to explore for a weekend or 3+ day trip.  The beauty of the Conejos valley is regardless of fishing success, there is beauty to take in and it’s really hard to have a bad trip here.  In addition, if one area fishes poorly, you have access to the lower, middle and upper sections of the Conejos, access to the tailwater section and access to the North, Adams, Lake, and South forks of the Conejos as options as well.  Tough to beat this kind of beauty and this much fishing to explore!
