How to Fly Fish with Nymphs

Your guide to fish-catching success →

Are you looking to improve your fly fishing game and catch more fish? If so, then you need to learn how to fly fish with nymphs. Nymphs are an effective fly fishing technique that imitates the immature form of aquatic insects, and they can be used in a variety of water conditions. In this guide, we’ll teach you the first steps that you need to know to get started with nymph fishing and start catching more fish today.

Section 1: Understanding Nymph Fishing

Use lighter flies to avoid spooking trout

Nymph fishing is a fly fishing technique that imitates the immature form of aquatic insects. These insects, called nymphs, spend most of their lives underwater and are an important food source for many fish species. Nymph fishing involves presenting a nymph fly to fish in a way that mimics the natural movement of the nymph in the water.

To fish with nymphs, you’ll need to use a specific setup that allows you to fish the nymph close to the bottom of the river or stream. This typically involves using a strike indicator, which is a small float that helps you detect when a fish has taken the fly.  While an indicator (it’s a bobber, but fly fisherman call it an indicator) is not necesssary and as you get more advanced, you may prefer to fish without one and try euro nymphing, an indicator is quite helpful for beginners.  When a trout eats the nymph under the water, you’ll see your indicator go stop, slow, go under or more in an unnatural way, and you can set the hook by raising your rod tip high up, creating tension in your line and setting the hook into the trouts mouth.

I like to tell beginners this tip on setting the hook.  Pretend you’re in school and the teacher just asked a question that you know the answer to.  You’re excited to answer so you raise your hand quickly, but not so forcefully the kids around you laugh at you.  This is the amount of pressure you apply to your hook set.  If you go full-on bill dance set the hook, flip out of your boat style, you’ll break your light tippet.  Raise your hand (and rod) up firmly and quickly to set the hook in the fish and maintain a tightline in order to keep the fish on the hook as you play it and bring it to the net.

Choosing the Right Nymph Fly

Match The Hatch isn’t Just for Dry Flies

Choosing the right nymph fly is crucial to nymph fishing success. The type of nymph you choose will depend on the specific insect species that are present in the water you’re fishing. It’s a good idea to do some research before you hit the water to determine which insects are most likely to be present in the area you’ll be fishing.

Some of the most popular nymph flies include the Pheasant Tail Nymph, the Hare’s Ear Nymph, and the Copper John Nymph. These flies imitate a variety of nymph species and can be effective in a wide range of water conditions. When selecting a nymph fly, be sure to match the size and color of the fly to the insects that are present in the water.  This entire topic is called “fly selection” and we’ve written 3 courses on it as well as 4+ free guides on it.  It isn’t overly complicated, but the more you know the better you will be at it.  You can learn the basics with our free guides, and when you’re ready to become an intermediate to advanced angler, you can try out our courses which come with a bunch of sweet deals as well.  We’ll list them below here for quick reference.

Presentation Techniques and Tips

The key to successful nymph fishing is presenting your fly in a way that mimics the natural movement of the nymph in the water. There are several techniques you can use to achieve this, including dead drifting, bouncing, and swinging.

Dead drifting involves casting your nymph upstream and allowing it to drift naturally downstream, following the current. This technique works best most times.

Bouncing involves casting your nymph upstream and manually jigging it up and down slightly to imitate a swimming or emerging insect.  This does not get used as often, but in times when emerging insects are active, it can be an effective technique.

Swinging involves casting your nymph upstream and allowing it to swing across the current, mimicking the natural movement of an emerging nymph. This technique is effective in both slower and faster moving water. It’s important to vary your presentation technique and experiment with different methods until you find what works best for the specific water conditions you’re fishing in.

Tips and Tricks for Nymph Fishing Success

Here are a few tips and tricks that can help you improve your nymph fishing success:

  • Be patient and persistent. Nymph fishing can take some time to master, so don’t get discouraged if you don’t catch fish right away.

  • Keep your nymph fly close to the bottom of the river or stream. This is where the nymphs are most likely to be found, and where the fish will be looking for them.

  • Vary your presentation. Fish can be finicky and may prefer a specific presentation style, so it’s important to experiment with different techniques until you find what works.

  • Use a strike indicator as a beginner to help detect when a fish has taken the fly. The indicator will move or disappear when a fish takes the fly, alerting you to set the hook.

  • Pay attention to the water conditions and adjust your approach accordingly. If the water is muddy, you may need to use a darker or larger fly to attract the fish.

  • Be observant and pay attention to the behavior of the fish. If you notice fish feeding close to the bottom, you may need to adjust your presentation to get your fly closer to the bottom.  The same goes if you see them elevated in the stream suspended in the middle of the current and so on.

  • Don’t be afraid to experiment with different nymph fly patterns. While some flies may be more effective than others, it’s always worth trying out new patterns to see what works best. (this is where our free guides and courses really help out)

  • Finally, always be respectful of the environment and the fish you catch. Handle the fish carefully and release them back into the water as quickly as possible to ensure their survival.
